Reading his own failed “experimental phase” through the Divergence Machine frame, Florian recovers Alexander von Humboldt’s idiosyncratic field studies (embodied, embedded, comfortable with gaps) as the seed of an “epistemology of divergence.” The closer turns on a distinction: failing backwards casts a good idea into a dead diorama; failing forwards keeps eyes open and marks the gaps.

Coda at the end draws a connection between the overall piece and the worldmachines project. The overall piece is about interpreting the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy as about a midlife crisis for humanity (and analogizes it to Dante and my own personal experiences) - the transitional phase we are in between machines has some analogous aspects.
